Lovely post and poem! So happy you got those awards. Well-deserved. I can't wait to read that novel, since, as you know, I am mining the same territory. And No, no longer the acquisitions editor! Not that you don't deserve and need a break and more time to write. 🥳

Oh Julia! You astound me. What a talent you are. This article brought tears to my eyes. (Unfortunately, I wasn't able to read your essay since I don't subscribe to that paper.) All I can say is: KEEP WRITING!

You are a beautiful writer, so easy to read...soothing, nourishing. So much that wants to be poetry is not. You are a true poet. Congratulations on your awards. Thanks for the work you're doing on enslavers in your family tree: "Telling these stories helps publicly reveal the depths of depravity hitherto unacknowledged in our privileged family. My whiteness has been my blessing, and I cannot forgive myself for it." So much of my creative inspiration comes from what's on the flip side of that coin: a descendant of the enslaved. My blackness has been a curse as well as a blessing.

Oh, Brenda, I feel this so much. Thank you for saying so. There is so much to excavate, and we can't just shrug it off. I appreciate your wise truths. <3
